On the equity-efficiency trade-off in food-bank network operations

چکیده

In this paper, we present a novel modelling perspective to the food-bank donation allocation problem under equity and efficiency performance measures. Using penalty factor in objective function, our model explicitly accounts for both equity, simultaneously. We give tightest lower upper bounds of factor, which can conveniently characterize closed-form optimal solutions perfect cases. Testing on full spectrum using real data from Feeding America, demonstrate that dominate those benchmark literature terms efficiency, utilization (utiloquity). Our sensitivity analysis demonstrates society should put its priority helping eliminate poverty before investing capacity expansions charity organizations like food-banks. This will ensure adding more network always lead decrease price On other hand, observed encouraging towards charitability is beneficial food-banks, albeit with diminishing returns. Finally, experiments reducing poverty, as most important element achieving higher dependent demand variability, opposed average level demand.

The Equity/Efficiency Trade-off in Retrospect

Writing in 1975, Arthur Okun is generally credited with popularizing the idea of a “great tradeoff" between equity and efficiency. Indeed, a generation of economists has been brought up thinking that in the allocation of scarce resources to competing ends, the tradeoff between “equity” and “efficiency” is just another one of the many tough choices that economically rational individuals have to ...

Choice-Consistent Resolutions of the Efficiency-Equity Trade-Off

In a standard framework of choice theory, we formulate two contrasting principles for social choice under the efficiency-equity trade-off. The equity-first principle states that we should select from equitable allocations if any, but if the equity criterion is not at all effective for selection either because all the available allocations are equitable or because no allocation is equitable, we ...

Poverty Traps and Development: The Equity-Efficiency Trade-Off Revisited

The paper discusses some core reasons why poverty remains widespread in many developing countries: market failures combine with asset inequalities to result in poverty persistence, and often poverty traps from which the poor may not be able to emerge, even in a context of aggregate economic growth. As examples the paper discusses some theoretical implications and empirical evidence for three co...

On the Efficiency-Fairness Trade-off

T paper deals with a basic issue: How does one approach the problem of designing the “right” objective for a given resource allocation problem? The notion of what is right can be fairly nebulous; we consider two issues that we see as key: efficiency and fairness. We approach the problem of designing objectives that account for the natural tension between efficiency and fairness in the context o...

A nonparametric elicitation of the equity-efficiency trade-off in cost-utility analysis.

We performed an empirical elicitation of the equity-efficiency trade-off in cost-utility analysis using the rank-dependent quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) model, a model that includes as special cases many of the social welfare functions that have been proposed in the literature. Our elicitation method corrects for utility curvature and, therefore, our estimated equity weights are not affecte...
